Tanaka and Sato sat on their hill one last time. Both were ancient now, their plastic bodies fragile, their paint faded.
"The village is beautiful," Tanaka whispered. "Look at all those lights."
Sato nodded. "We built this. Together."
A child's voice called from below: "Grandpa! Come see my school play!"
Tanaka smiled but didn't move. "Too tired tonight."
The child ran up, hugged him tight. "Tomorrow then?"
"Tomorrow," Tanaka promised.
But when tomorrow came, Tanaka didn't wake. His plastic form sat peacefully on the hill, facing the village he had helped build.
