"The village is beautiful," Tanaka whispered. "Look at all those lights."

Sato nodded. "We built this. Together."

A child's voice called from below: "Grandpa! Come see my school play!"

Tanaka smiled but didn't move. "Too tired tonight."

The child ran up, hugged him tight. "Tomorrow then?"

"Tomorrow," Tanaka promised.

But when tomorrow came, Tanaka didn't wake. His plastic form sat peacefully on the hill, facing the village he had helped build.

Sato found him there, sat beside him, and stayed until sunset.

Then he too closed his eyes.

The next morning, the village found them together, frozen in eternal peace. They built a monument on that hill, two figures forever watching over the world they had chosen to create.

The choice was complete. The legacy lived on.
